Leo Metatawabin is a Survivor of the Ste. Anne’s Indian Residential School and a member of Fort Albany First Nation. His given spiritual name, Shagastow Man Standing, was received through the sweat lodge following his sacred fast in Northern Alberta many years ago.
He is a father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
He is an advocate for community development for well-being programming, guided by strong advice of elders and knowledge keepers. A firm believer in traditional pursuits, Leo has been instrumental in organizing cultural ceremonies that support healing, natural laws, identify environmental/community issues/impacts, knowledge gathering and storytelling.
He shares his story with local schools, detox programs and anyone interested in learning about truth, resilience and cultural restoration.
