Jennifer Bruin

Jennifer is a sustainable development leader and strategist for clients constructing large infrastructure projects in various market sectors. She possesses over 20 years experience in both Canada and the US in management consulting, engineering consulting, environmental assessment etc. in sectors such as transportation, transit, energy and land development. Jennifer is currently serving as Technical Advisor to Marten Falls First Nation. In her role she oversees all aspects of the Federal-Provincial coordinated Environmental Assessment (EA) process. She is honored to be working on this important community led project that includes Aboriginal traditional knowledge and scientific data within its decision making process. Jennifer has a Bachelors (BA) degree with an Honours Major in Environmental Planning from Dalhousie TUNS/ NSCAD University and an Executive Masters of Business Administration (EMBA) from Northwestern and York University.

3(A) - Panel Discussion | Indigenous Proponent Perspectives: Assessing Aboriginal & Treaty Rights

This presentation will focus on Marten Falls First Nation's (MFFN) experience as a proponent of the Marten Falls Community Access Road project in Ontario. The assessment of Aboriginal and/or Treaty Rights and Interests (ATRI) was undertaken while balancing responsibilities as a proponent, cultural sensitivity, and advancing self-determination. The panel will examine the complexities of conducting ATRI assessments as an Indigenous proponent for other Indigenous communities and organizations. The discussion would touch on questions such as “how can Indigenous proponents get comfortable assessing ATRI?” Panelists would share important perspectives on how MFFN's work contributes to shaping a future where Indigenous communities lead in the environmental sector as proponents, while upholding their own ATRI and the ATRI of others.
