Vanessa Rowena Gloria (Macumber) Genier, M.S.M., is the proud Founder and CEO of Quilts for Survivors. She is a proud member of Missanabie Cree First Nation in Ontario. Vanessa’s love of quilting began at age nine. In June 2021, after the heartbreaking confirmation of 215 unmarked graves at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School, Vanessa took action. She called on quilters from across Turtle Island and beyond to create 215 quilt blocks—plus one—to honor the lives lost. This heartfelt initiative quickly evolved into Quilts for Survivors, a grassroots movement committed to truth, reconciliation, and healing. Vanessa’s tireless work has earned widespread recognition. Most notably, she received the Meritorious Service Medal (Civil Division) from the Governor General of Canada, one of the nation’s highest civilian honors, for her profound contributions to community healing and reconciliation.
